ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
Q. What Is One Billion Rising Revolution?
A. One Billion Rising Revolution is an escalation of the first two stages of our campaign -- One Billion Rising and One Billion Rising for Justice. The last two years we’ve mobilized, engaged, awakened, and joined people worldwide to end violence against women. The campaign highlighted the fact that violence against women is a global human issue not relegated to country or tribe or class or religion, further exposing it as a patriarchal mandate, present in every culture of the world.
This year we must create a radical shift in consciousness, we must be braver, bolder and more creative and determined to bring about change.
Q. When Is One Billion Rising Revolution?
A. One Billion Rising Revolution will take place on February 14, 2016.
Q. Why February 14?
A. Valentine's Day becomes V-Day, born on February 14, 1998. In the past 17 years, tens of thousands of V-Day events have taken place all over the world, raising funds and awareness for local groups and organizations working to end violence against women and girls. V-Day is about the audacious idea that we can end violence against women. We have seen many victories over the years, but the violence is still prevalent and impunity still reigns. One Billion Rising Revolution is a necessary escalation in our global efforts to end the violence.
Q. Why Revolution?
A. We’ve danced. We’ve demanded justice. Now it's time for a radical shift in consciousness, one that dares not just to envision but to bring about the changes necessary to create a world without violence against women and girls. It's time for Revolution.
Q. Why One Billion?
A. One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. In a world of approximately six billion people, that is ONE BILLION WOMEN. In 2013 & 2014, one billion women and men shook the earth through dance and a call for justice and an end violence against women and girls. In 2015, we started our Revolution. This year, on February 14, 2016 we are calling on women and men everywhere to continue to harness their power and imagination RISE FOR REVOLUTION.
Q. Why Dance?
A. When we dance, we reclaim our bodies. For survivors of violence, dancing allows us to inhabit our bodies once again, to claim our power, to reconnect. Dancing bypasses intellect to speak directly to our hearts. Dancing connects us to each other, to the earth, to a universal rhythm. Dancing is joyous defiance. It is contagious and free and beyond corporate or state control.
Dance is one of the most powerful forces on the earth and we have only just begun to tap into where it can take us. The struggle of humanity is the struggle to return to our bodies. Dancing allows us to come back into our bodies---as individuals, as groups, as a world. It connects our feet to the earth and inspires us to move to her rhythms. It allows us to go further, to include everyone, to tap into a revolutionary and poetic energy to take the lid off the patriarchal container, releasing more of our wisdom, our self love. our sexuality, our compassion, our fierceness. Our souls.
We have only begun to dance.
